The South Carolina Sod Producers Association was formed in the mid 1980’s. The purpose of the organization is to promote and improve the sod industry in the state, to work for solutions to mutual problems of the sod industry, and to ensure environmental stewardship. The association promotes goodwill, understanding, cooperation, and compatibility among the members.
The association has about 20 members at this time including sod growers and associate members from all over the state. This is an exciting time in the sod industry as many new sod varieties are being introduced while many of our tried and true varieties are still in production.
The association was member driven until they hired Dr. Landen Miller in 2000 after his retirement from Clemson University’s Horticulture Department. Dr. Miller passed away in October 2009 leaving the organization member driven again.
Helen Legare was hired in September 2010 to take over the organization and move it forward. Helen Legare has worked on her family’s sod farm since 1987. She has been involved in every facet of the sod farm from mowing grass to stacking sod on the harvestor. Legare graduated from Clemson University with a degree in Agronomy and a minor in horticulture in 1981. She served as President of the SC Nursery and Landscape Association in 2007. She serves as chairman of the SC Farm Bureau Ornamental Horticulture and Turfgrass Commodity Committee.
